This large-scale mural was commissioned by Haymes Paints and measures 2.8m x 4.2m. It was a challenging yet highly rewarding project, and I’m grateful to Haymes for the honor of depicting the late David Haymes. The mural also presents a new interpretation of the original "Man on the Ladder" mural, a Ballarat landmark since the 1970s. From the initial concept to the final design, I worked closely with Haymes Paints to capture their brand’s essence. Haymes Paints Showroom Creswick Rd, Ballarat.
I was honoured to be one of seven artists selected by the City of Ballarat for the 2024 Winter Festival's Art Trail.
The project emphasized public engagement, with each artwork telling its own story while maintaining a thematic link to others. My artwork was based on the beautiful Lake Wendouree and it's ever present black swans. The mural allowed visitors and residents to immerse themselves in the scene and take selfies, enhancing their connection to the place. Hop Lane, Ballarat.
This 3.5m x 2.5m mural can be found in the dining room of the historic Mallow Hotel.
The linocut references a 1942 Victorian Railways photograph titled "Arch of Honour" which I found in the Victorian State Library archives. Tasked to capture the railway crossing behind, the photographer framed it with the WWI monument. Why? His choice of focal subject and unlikely title may reflect the sombre WWII period in which the photograph was taken. Mallow Hotel, Skipton St, Ballarat.
